In the past, there were many governmental organizations that manage seas and islands in Vietnam. Due to this reason, the data on seas and islands are in various formats, poorly distributed, inconsistent and incompatible with regional and international standards. Most data of seas and islands managed by various organizations - data producers with their an systems cannot become a reliable information source for research, manqgement and decision making activities. The adoption of new datum standard is in trouble because each organization uses its own data format and standard. Outcomes of fundamental investigation programs, as well as management activities by MONRE and other ministries on marine natural resources and environment, create a tremendous volume of data. Thus, the research on current state of data on sea and island will well support to establishing a data standard in this field in the near future.
