In order to orientate the development of Arabica coffee growing area in Mai Son district, Son La province, land suitability classification for coffee following FAO method was carried out on the area of 135,604.5 ha of agricultural land and 35,115,61 ha of unused upland. A land suitability classification map with scale of 1/50,000 for coffee has been developed. The results of land suitability classification for coffee in Mai Son showed that Mai Son land have only less suitable level (S3) for Arabica coffee (32,060.04 hectares, accounting for 23.64% of the total assessed area). When actively irrigated, 28,792.44 hectares of land will be changed from less suitable S3 to suitable S2 level. Currently, there are 1,307 ha in Mai Son growing Arabica coffee on unsuitable land areas that need to be converted to other crops. It is proposed that the land area for Arabica coffee cultivation will be 10,000 hectares by 2025 (of which the new planted area will be 4,954 hectares in communes of Muong Bang, Chieng Mung, Chieng Chan, Muong Bon, Chieng Mai, Co Noi, Hat Lot, Chieng Ban, Chieng Chung, Chieng Ve, and Chieng Luong.
