Mango leaves contain the main component mangiferin, which has been proven by many studies to have the effect of lowering blood sugar, however, studies in Vietnam on toxicity as well as hypoglycemic effects of mango leaves are limited. Objective: To evaluate of acute toxicity and hypoglycemic effect of mango leaf extract in a white mice model. Materials and methods: Purified mango leaf extract with Mangiferin content reaching 90%. The acute toxicity test of mango leaf extract was conducted on Swiss albino, following the guidelines of Do Trung Dam "Methods to determine drug toxicity"; The hypoglycemic effect of mango leaf extract was evaluated by the method of inducing hyperglycemia in mice with Alloxan, hyperglycemic mice were then divided into groups as follows: negative control group-no treatment, positive control grouptreatment with Metformin 500 mg/kg/day and 2 trial groups of mango leaf extract at doses of 100 and 200 mg/kg/day respectively for 21 days. Blood glucose results were recorded every week and compared between 2 trial batches groups with negative control group, positive control group and physiological groups. Results: All mice in the batches were alive and showed no toxicity during the trial period despite the maximum dose of 5.000 mg/kg body weight. The blood glucose level of the trial groups was significantly reduced (p<0.05) compared with the negative control group and equivalent to the positive control group. Conclusion: No acute toxicity of Mango leaf extract was detected when tested to dose level of 5.000 mg/kg and had significant hypoglycemic effect at doses of 100 and 200 mg/kg body weight.
