Based on the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria (2001, version 3.1), twenty two species belonging to seven families of dragonflies and damselflies from Vietnam were assessed as nationally threatened species and proposed to be listed in the Vietnam Red Book. Two groups with a high number of threatened species are the Gomphid group with five species and the Calopterygid group with four species. The most endangered species is Echo maxima, from Huu Lien, Lang Son province (listed as Critically Endangered). Only one female specimen of this species has been recorded since the original description in 1904 (Critically Endangered). The species Rhinocypha orea was assessed as endangered because of it's restricted geographic range and degradation of habitat quality. Other species were assessed as vulnerable, near threatened, or data deficient.
