Nowadays, due to the development of science and technology, especially the data science and artificial intelligence, the traditional methods have been gradually replaced by more effective and modern methods. In Vietnam, the determination of asphalt content of asphalt mixtures is performed by extraction method using the centrifuge. This method requires many steps and uses solvents that are not good for the environment and human health. This paper presents the investigation into the application of image analysis method for determining asphalt content and air void of asphalt mixtures. Four types of asphalt mixture with different aggregate sources and gradations were fabricated and tested. For each type of asphalt mixture, the images of specimen cross section by scanning were used. An image analysis program is built to analyze captured image. Color images is converted to grayscale images. Aggregate, bitumen and air void are distinguished due to intensity of light at each pixel in the grayscale image. From the image analysis, the asphalt content and air void of the asphalt mixture specimens were determined. The obtained results show that the image analysis method could determine the volumetric properties of the mixture quite accurately and opens up many other studies in the future.
