Assessments of upper eye lid contractile scar treatment using temporal subcutaneous pedicle island cutaneous flap

Objective: To sum up the clinical characteristics of upper eye lid contractile scars and assess the use of temporal subcutaneous island pedicle cutaneous flaps; find out the advantages and disadvantages of the flaps. Patients And Methods: 32 patients with upper eye lid contractile scars used temporal subcutaneous island pedicle cutaneous flaps; prospective study. Results: Most of the scars caused by infectious sequel (19/32), then trauma (8/32) and post radio therapy (5/32); the average size of the skin loss after scar removal is 3,7cm2; average size of the flaps is 4,5 cm2; 27/32 flaps survived totally, excellent out come was obtained in 21 among 32 patients post-operatively. Long-term follow-up showed excellent result in 15 among 18 patients. The authors experienced 2 flaps died and 3 others partly necrosis, mainly occur in post radiation therapy patients. Conclusions: Upper eye lid contractile scar mainly caused by infectious and trauma consequence; the average size of skin Joss after scar removal is 3,7cm2 and the mean size of the flaps used is 4,5 cm2. The temporal subcutaneoas island pedicle cutaneous flap is a simple and effective approach for reconstruction of upper eye lid contractile scar.
