Vietnam is located in Southeast Asia has a coastline of over 3260 km (not including Islands). qnd an exclusive-economic zone approximately over 1,000,000 km2 of maritime terriotory, including 3000 near shore and offshore Islands. The Vietnam coast has significant ecosystems such as mangrove forests, coral reefs, seagrass beds, estuaries, lagoons and tidal beaches, etc. The marine studies up to date have identified 10,837 aquatic species. Among those the marine turtles are the important component of marine biodiversity of Vietnam. The marine turtles are rare species and threatened at the global level and hold significant value in many societies throughout the world, including Southeast Asia. In Vietnamese sea waters there have been indentified jive species of marines turtles belonging to 4 genera of 2 families such as Cheloniidae and Dermochelyidae. In some last years, the number of marine turtles decreased significantly, caused by effects of the human and global climate changes. In order to conserve and enhance marine turtle resources, it is necessery to carry out synchronous studies, increase public awareness of the threats to marine turtles and their habitats, and enhance public participation in conservation activities as well as enhance national, regional and international cooperation.
