The abundance and distribution of selected trace elements (especially incompatible ones) in volcanic and granitic rocks can be used to classify the products of various magma series belonging to different tectonic settings. As these element are immobile during post-consolidation alteration and metamorphic processes, these methods of rock-type classification and tectonic environment identification are well applied to metamorphic and weathered rocks
