Crash sensors and air bags are used to protect the driver and the passengers in case of side impact. Because of the distinct structural features and collision dynamics, the characteristics of side impacts are different from those involving frontal impacts. These differences reflext on the sensing concepts and the types of crash sensors suitable for side impact restraints. In this paper we present the research related to side impact sensing and air bags used on automobiles today.
