Objective: Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder that affects many people of all ages around the world. Several recent studies have shown that infection Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is one of the causes in cryptogenic epilepsy. In this study, the authors investigated CMV infection in young epileptic and clinical characteristic differences between seropositive and seronegative with CMV. Material and methods: the authors selected 72 patients diagnosed epilepsy in Center Pediatrics and Hue Central Hospital conducted tests for CMV IgM, IgG in serum by ELISA. the authors divided into two study groups (groups with seropositive and seronegative group with CMV) and finding the difference between the two groups on several clinical characteristics of epileptic children. Results: The prevalence of CMV in epileptic children 81.9 percent, mainly a chronical infection. Including the rate of children with progressing infection CMV was 34.7 percent (lgM positive or IgG positive 4 times higher than controls). There is statistically significant between the group is progressing infection CMV and the negative group with the frequency seizure (p 0.05). However, the authors found no significant between the two groups in age, gender, type of seizures and epilepsy duration. Conclusion: Cytomegalovirus infected status rather high proportion of children with epilepsy. The finding for causes of cryptogenic epilepsy is essential in the treatment to reduce the recurrence rate, the resistance of treatment and prolonged AEDs treatment.
