Biofloc technology is considered as a viable solution for waste treatment, food supplement and disease control in intensive aquaculture systems. The addition of carbon to maintain the ratio of C/N in the water will create conditions for the development of heterotrophic bacteriaand the production of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) for floc formation. This study was to isolate and identify bacterial strains capable of producing floc from shrimp pond water and assess the production of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), as well as their ammonia handling. Molasses, sucrose and wheat flour were used as carbon sources added to Penaeusvannamefs pond water. Biofloc samples were collected and cultured by conventional methods and screened to eliminate pathogenic Vibrio spp. As a result, three bacterial strains have been isolated (Acinetobacter schindleri, Exiguobacterium aestuarii and Pseudomonas pseudocaligenes) with the ability of forming floc through high EPS production ( 5g/L, P 0.05). Ability to handle NH4-N of E. aestuariiwas highest (p 0.05), achieved 99.2 percent after 6 hours. This study provides initial important information to develop probiotics for intensive shrimp farming applying Biofloc technology.
