Chưng cất màng (tên tiếng Anh là Membrane Distillation, viết tắt là MD) là công nghệ khử mặn rất hứa hẹn để đáp ứng nhu cầu nước uống cho các cộng đồng dân cư ở những khu vực duyên hải ven biển xa xôi và trên các đảo, hải đảo. MD là công nghệ lai ghép giữa một chưng cất truyền thống với một quá trình tách màng, do đó công nghệ này thừa hưởng những ưu điểm của cả hai quá trình trên. Trên thế giới, công nghệ MD đã được nghiên cứu và phát triển cho các hệ thống khử mặn nước biển để cung cấp nước uống với quy mô lên đến 100 m3 /ngày. Trong nghiên cứu này, lần đầu tiên một hệ thống khử mặn nước biển sử dụng công nghệ MD ở quy mô hiện trường (công suất 1 m3 /ngày) được thiết kế, lắp đặt và triển khai nghiên cứu thực nghiệm tại Việt Nam. Hệ thống khử mặn sử dụng công nghệ MD với nước cấp là nước biển được vận hành ở các điều kiện nhiệt độ và lưu lượng tuần hoàn khác nhau để khảo sát hiệu quả hoạt động của hệ thống. Kết quả nghiên cứu cho thấy nhiệt độ dòng nước cấp và lưu lượng tuần hoàn ảnh hưởng mạnh lên thông lượng cất nước và điện năng tiêu thụ của hệ thống MD. Khi vận hành ở nhiệt độ dòng cấp là 800oC, lưu lượng tuần hoàn nước là 360 L/h, hệ thống có thể cung cấp 45 L/h nước cất đạt tiêu chuẩn nước uống với điện năng tiêu thụ riêng là 96 kWh/m3 nước cất. Với giá bán điện trên đảo An Bình là 2.200 đồng/kWh, chi phí vận hành (bao gồm tiền điện và nhân công lao động) để điều chế 1 m3 nước uống từ nước biển bằng công nghệ MD là 511.200 đồng.

Membrane distillation (MD) has been considered a promising desalination technology to provide drinking water to people living in remote coastal areas and on islands. MD is hybrid process that combines traditional thermal distillation and membrane filtration; thus, it inherits the advantages of these both separation technologies. In the world, MD has been developed and deployed for drinking water provision with capacity up to 100 m3 /day. In this study, for the first time, a pilot seawater MD desalination system was designed, built, and trialed on an island in Vietnam. The pilot MD system was operated with real seawater at different water temperatures and water circulation rates to examine the performance of the system. The experimental results demonstrate strong influences of the feed inlet temperature and water circulation rates on the water flux and specific energy consumption of the system. When operated under the feed inlet temperature of 800oC, water circulation rate of 360 L/h, the system could produce 45 L/h of high quality distillate with the specific energy consumption of 96 kWh/m3 . The estimated production cost (i.e. for electricity and labor) of the pilot MD system for 1 m3 of drinking water was 511,200 VND.
