Objective: to analyse indications of surgical treatment for Basedow's disease. Materials and methods: Descriptive, prospective study in 20 patients was diagnosed with Basedow's disease. Results: average age was 37 years, 90 percent of the patients were women. 50 percent of the patients had medical treatment more than two years. Indications for surgery included failure of medical treatment (50 percent), big goiter (35 percent), exophthalmos (20 percent), nodular goiter (20 percent), complications from medical treatment (20 percent), pregnant willingness (15 percent). 95 percent of the cases underwent total thyroidectomy. Postoperatively, temporary hypocalcemia was seen in 55 percent of the patients. Conlusion : surgery was one of options that provided good long-term results with few complications.
