During recent years, rice production in Asia and as well in Vietnam is threatened by the Whitebacked planthopper (WBPH). It is causing not only loss of yield but also it transmits a very dangerous viral disease (Southern rice black - streaked dwarf virus). To manage WBPH and the viral disease, research on the insect vector is necessary. During spring season, the nymphal stages of WBPH last 12 -13 days, the adult stage 7 - 14 days and the total life cycle is 23 - 27 days. The egg laying ability of WBPH on the various rice varieties is quite different. It is most adapted to the Chinese varieties (both hybrid and inbred rice). The position of/the eggs depends on the rice stage. At the young stages (seed bed - panicle) eggs will be laid in the sheath. At older stages eggs will be laid in the mid - rib. Some main indexes of uninfected WBPH and infected WBPH proved to be not significantly different.
