Trong bối cảnh thuật ngữ Ấn Độ Dương - Thái Bình Dương được nhắc đến ngày một nhiều hơn như một khái niệm địa - chiến lược, ảnh hưởng của Ấn Độ trong khu vực này cũng được chú ý nhiều hơn. Với vị trí địa lý thuận lợi và sự trỗi dậy mạnh mẽ trong thời gian qua, Ắn Độ được kỳ vọng tham gia vào tiến trình thể chế hóa và hoạt động quản trị khu vực, thúc đẩy các hoạt động hợp tác và kết nối, trở thành “nhà cung cấp an ninh ” và là “lực lượng cân bằng" không thể thiếu ở Ấn Độ Dương - Thái Bình Dương.
