Epidemiological studies show an increasing incidence of human papilloma virus-associated oropharyngeal cancer. HPV-positive head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is recognized as a special subgroup of HNSCC. The study was performed on tumour tissue samples of 48 nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) patients and tonsil samples of 50 chronic tonsillitis patients by nested PCR techniques. The results showed that the prevalence of HPV in NPC tissue samples were 9/48 (18.75 percent) in comperison with 1/50(2 percent) of tonsil tissue samples of chronic tonsillitis patients (p=0.006; Chi2(1)=7.5). The risk of NPC in patients with HPV infection was significantly increased in comperison to non HPVinfected patients (OR= 11.31, 95 percent 0: 1.43-505.42). This finding showed that HPV infection associated to NPC patients and caused significantly increased the risk of NPC.
