John Updike (1932-2009) is one of the famous postmodern American authors. His novels and short stories have been translated into many languages in the world. He is considered the outstanding heir of the modern literature masters such as Ernest Hemingway and William Faulkner etc. Starting from the "American Dream" and "American Tragedy", John Updike has been somewhat generalized American characters and recommends convincible the so-called American Identity in his time with people hang around in vain as their dreams gradually have been drifted away by unspecified grounds.
