The results of a cross - sectional descriptive study through using the questionnaire to interview 390 mothers of children under 24 months of age in Mai Son district, Son La province in 2014 to describe the awareness, the practice and the accessibility of safe motherhood services of women showed that: (1) The awareness of mothers on safe motherhood and the danger signs of pregnancy was high, mainly through health care workers (70.4 percent) and village health workers (75.6 percent); the awareness of mothers in the communes which met national standards on health was higher than that in the communes which did not. (2) 96.7 percent of mothers went to the state health facilities for examination when having the danger signs of pregnancy; practicing tetanus vaccination for first-time pregnant mothers was 91.8 percent and that for enough shots was 95.2 percent. (3) The accessibility of services of most mothers was in commune health stations and other health facilities, just only 1 percent for midwifes and 7.2 percent for family members; however, there were still over 50 percent of mothers without consultation of contraception when having sex again. Two recommendations were proposed that: (1) To set up priority for investing for the communes which did not meet national standards on health in remote areas to increase the awareness, the practice and the accessibility of mothers in general and mothers of children under 24 months of age in particular; (2) To strengthen the consultancy services about the contraception for postpartum mothers when having sex again.
