Tympanic atelectasis presents the unsafe type of otitis media because this may lead to the development of cholesteatoma. The aim of this study was to assess the anatomic and functional results of surgery for atelectatic ears. Materials and methods: Descriptive, prospective study. From January 2010 to October 2012, sixty-six ears including forty-one total atelectatic ears and twenty-five partial ones underwent surgery. The results showed that after six months of follow-up, 92.4 percent of the ears was free of recurrence of retraction; five out of 66 ears (7.6 percent) had re-collapse, all of them were generalised atelectasis of grade III or grade IV. 45.4 percent of the ears had PTA or
