Meta-substituted phennols, such as m-crezol, cardanol have been used to prepare phenolic resins, a binder in friction materials. The characteristics of the above obtained resins were compared to those of unmodified and modified novolak resins J1051H and J115H, manufactured by BP Chemicals (UK). Abration test and scanning electronic microscope photographs showed that the phenol-cardanol-formaldehyde resin proved to be the best binder for friction materials
