60 patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGI bleeding) due to rupture of esophageal varices at Emergency Department - Bachmai hospital from 5/2010 to 10/2010 was evaluated for the efficacy of terlipressin treatment. After being diagnosed with rupture of esophageal varices and endoscopic hemostasis treatment, patients were divided into 2 groups: Group 1 (routine treatment with terlipressin) and group 2 (routine treatment without terlipressin). Terlipressin is capable of controlling bleeding (p 0.05) and possibly reducing the mortality ratio (p 0.05), decreasing the volume of blood transfusions, without difference on the rate of recurrent bleeding and the duration of hospital stay between two groups. The evaluation of haemostatic efficacy of terlipressin suggested that terlipressin can be used for treatment of UGI bleeding due to the rupture of esophageal varices, especially in cases of not obtaining endoscopic hemostasis treatment.
