Some factors in relation to number of ovarioles and stored sperms of Apis cerena queens in Thai Nguyen province

In this study, number of ovarioles in ovaries and stored sperms in spermathecae of queen bees relating to their age, origination and body-weight, and seasons to make them was considered from 46 queen bees of Apis cerana, which were being kept and harvested in Thai Nguyen province. The results showed that the number of ovarioles in ovaries of the queens ranged from 87.27 to 102.54. This number of natural queens was higher than that of grafting and emerging ones. Number of ovarioles was proportional to weight of the queens. Number of stored sperms in spermathecae of the queens ranged from 3.19 to 3.21 million. This number much varied depending on the origination and age of the queen and the right seasons to make them. Number of stored sperms of natural queens was higher than that of the grafting and emerging queens. This number was positively proportional to body weight, but negatively to the age of the queen. Results of the study are applicable for selection of right time and methods to make queen bees of A. cerana with high reproduction.
