Overweight and obesity are increasing in adolescents in Ho Chi Minh city (HCM city). Obesity in adolescents substantially increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases in adulthood. This study aims to describe the energy and macronutrient intakes and their relationship with body mass index (BMI) among adolescents in HCM city. Methods: In a cross-sectional study of 1,989 junior high school students of HCM city in 2010, students were measured for BMI and interviewed on their dietary intakes based on validated food frequency questionnaire. Results: Median of total energy was 2,774 kcal per day. Boys had higher macronutrient intakes than girls. Children living in wealthier families had higher percentages of energy from macronutrients than those living in less wealthy families. Overweight and obese girls had an inverse association with macronutrient intakes. Conclusions: Total energy intake of adolescents exceeded the Vietnam Recommended Dietary Allowances 2007.
