This article briefly outlines the semantic characteristics of word groups in Hue dialect, hereby contributing to the body of existing data to determine the position of Hue dialect in the dialect continuum of the modem Vietnamese language. An examinination of sixteen combinations of product words in Hue dialect shows sharp variations in the meanings of words that have similar meanings in other dialects in Northern, Central and Southern Vietnam. Besides, the study also identifies a number of variables that affect the form of the semantic features of these words, such as the product's geographical origin, cultivation mode, size, shape, color, quality and price. Subsequently, it can be said that among various factors, geographical origin (cultivation and harvest in Hue and other areas) is the most significant one. The parallel presence of each word combination with definitional differentiations can be said to support the conclusion that the Hue dialect has a transitional characteristic existing between the southern and northern dialects.
