The article discusses the phenomenon of offering "golden statue in human shape" as a tribute in the history of Vietnam-China diplomatic relations during medieval times. In this article, from the comparative analysis between official historical records (also referred to as "history written by the Imperial court") noting the offering "gold human body" as a tribute in both China and Vietnam records, and non-orthodox, private or anonymous materials (with many anecdotes of the kind of "unofficial history") that including the Westerners, call folk legends, the author point out the differences of viewpoints, attitudes and motives of both sides represented by various historical records, both official and unofficial, to clarify the domination of such external agents as subject, background, purpose, power, knowledge... in reflecting, interpreting, and receiving a historical phenomenon. The article also points out the dominant power of the "key" texts and the power of the "misunderstandings" in explaining the texts or discourses.
