Carboxyl cellulose nanofibers were directly prepared from lotus seedpod residue by the one-step nitro-oxidation method. Different methods including TEM images, SEM images, EDX spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction were used to analyze the characteristics of the obtained materials. TEM images show that the nanofibers were formed successfully with the width and the length of the nanofibers were around 40-60 nm and around 0.2-2 pm, respectively. FTIR, EDX spectroscopies and titration proved that the presence of -COOH groups on the surface of the product with its amount of 5.0 mmol/g or 22 wt%. In negative form, these -COO- groups could support the uniform dispersion of the nanofibers in aqueous medium. Compared with conventional multiple-step processes, the current approach is simpler, less chemical use and less energy consumption. Overall, this study proposed an advanced route for facile preparation of carboxyl cellulose nanofibers from biomass for further applications.
