This field study on corrosion of STK400 graded steel was conducted in Phu My port for 5 years. The STK steel pile with a length of 12 m, diameter of 165 mm and thickness of 9 mm, had been exposed to entire envứonmental zones of Phu My port, including atmospheric, tidal, submerged and mud zones, for 5 years. The extreme localized corrosion was observed from the formation of holes through the steel substrate at water altitude of near low mean level (LML). In the profile of corrosion rate distribution, high rate peaks were observed at altitude of about 1.7 m (under the high mean level - HML), 4.2 m (LML) and 8 m (above sea bed) with corrosion rate of0.3,0.44 and 0.37 mm/year, respectively. The study’s results show that the extreme corrosion occurring at LML is initiated by permeation of seawater on the surface of steel pile at LML, leading to high polarization between areas along the length of steel pile. Aerobic corrosion occurred at early stage due to renewable dissolved oxygen of tidal cycles, followed by corrosion reactions on the surface of steel substrate. As a result, localized corrosion occurred during long period and formed holes through the steel substrate with coưosion rate of 1.8 mm/year. Such results showed that extreme coưosion at the low mean level is an important cause of structural destruction of steel structures immersed in brackish envừonment ofPhu My port.
