The northern Vietnamese highland is a peripheral area where a traditional way of living based on self-subsistence agriculture is still prevalent. Recently some districts in this area were opened for international tourism which brought a new income source to the remote area. This research was carried out in Sapa district. a tourism area in the northern Vietnamese Highlands in order to investigate the impact of tourism development on local livelihoods and land use change at household level. In depth interviews with local households show that the tourism brought an additional income to many of the ethnic minorities that improved their living standard significantly. Nevertheless, many households living in remote locations away from the main tourist centre do not have the opportunitity to participate in the tourism business. On the basis of aerial photos and VHR-SPOT image land use change between 2002 and 2012 was mapped. The analysis shows that households in villages involved in tourism reduced their farming practices which resulted in a slowing down of arable land expansion and even forest regrowth on abandoned fields.
