Effects of natural polymeric flocculants on the settling process of Gia Nghia red mud were observed. The results show that natural settling of red mud generated from Gia Nghia bauxite is difficult and not feasible in alumina production. The two types of natural polymeric materials, flour starch and DR starch, when used as flocculants, have facilitated the red mud settling. The suitable dosage of flocculants for Gia Nghia red mud settling are 5 g/kg dry red mud - DRM (flour starch) and 3 g/kg DRM (DR starch). The appropriate settling time is 30 minutes. Among the natural polymeric flocculahts used, DR starch has better flocculating property compare to flour starch.
