Light oil fraction indicates the catagenetic grade of sediment and kerogen type. Heptane value (H) and isoheptane value (I) are ratios of normal paraffin to naphthene and branched paraffin to naphthane. This paper presents the method to determine the two values and its application for organic matter dertermination. The empirical correlation derived between vitrinite values (Ro) and heptane value (H) indicates that Cuu Long basin's oil is aliphatic kerogens (Kerogen type II and I) in mature and super mature conditions.
