The effect granular or slow-release nitrogen fertilizer on growth, development and yield of C919 hybrid maize was studied in Winter 2011 and Spring 2012, in Vinh Loc district, Thanh Hoa province. The experiment consisted of seven application levels per hectare (T1: Okg N; T2: 90kg N; T3: 120kg N; T4: 150kg N; T5: 180kg N; T6: 210kg N and T7: 150kg N). The experiment was arranged in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications, 14 m2 plot size, and planting density of 59,000/ha. The experiment plots were applied with 8 tons of manure, 90 P2O5 and 90 K2O/ha. The study results showed that the use of slow-release nitrogen fertilizer exerted positive effect on growth, development and yield of corn. With application levels from 120kg N to 210 kg N/ha corn yields varried from 7.046 ton/ha to 7.813 ton/ha; higher than urea application from 16.9 - 21.7 percent. Application of slowrelease nitrogen fertilizer increased nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) as compared with urea. It was suggested that forcultivation of C919 maize in the study area, slow-release nitrogen fertilizer be applied with the rate of 120 kg N/ha plus the 8 tons of manure, 90kg P2O5 and 90kg K2O.
