There have been few studies investigating the relationship between vitamin A, zinc deficiencies and nutritional status. This study aims to identify the prevalence of vitamin A, zinc deficiencies and the relationship with the nutritional status. 136 preschool children aged 3-5 years old from 2 communes Vo Mieu and Van Mieu, Thanh Son district, Phu Tho province were selected to participate in the study. Body weight and height were measured, venous blood was taken to measure serum Retinol and zinc concentrations. The prevalence of vitamin A deficiency was 21.3 percent, zinc deficiency was 75 percent. In boys, girls, and both sexes, there were no significant differences on serum Retinol, zinc concentrations, prevalence of Vitamin A, zinc deficiencies between underweight and normal children (P 0.05). Serum zinc concentration in stunted girls was lower than that in non-stunted ones: 50.7 Ilg/dL versus 56,9 Ilg/dL (P = 0.03). Prevalence of vitamin A and zinc deficiency is high. There is a relationship between stunting and serum zinc concentration in girls, no relationship has been found between vitamin A deficiency and nutritional status.
