The present study determined the prevalence and characteristics of the metabolic syndrome in 560 cases of the Buddhist monks in Ba Ria - Vung Tau. Objective: To investigate prevalence and characteristics of metabolic syndrome in the Buddhist monks with continuous fasting in Ba Ria - Vung Tau; To determine the relationship between metabolic syndrome and meditation practice mode. Subject and method: The Buddhist monks have duration of austerity over 3 years. Methods: a descriptive, prospective, crosssectional study was conducted. All individuals in the cohort were examined clinical and subclinical symptom. Result: The rate of metabolic syndrome in the Buddhist monks in Ba Ria - Vung Tau was 18.6 percent. The proportion of metabolic syndrome in group with lower level of meditation practice was lower than those of high level of meditation practice. The risk of metabolic syndrome in subjects not practicing meditation increased 5.26 times, with OR = 5.26, p0.001. Conclusion: The ratio of metabolic syndrome in the Buddhist monks in Ba ria-Vung tau is 18.6 percent. Practicing meditation is related reduction in the rate of metabolic syndrome in the Buddhist monks.
