Fabrication of acid-base based bifunctional mesoporous catalyst K,Mg,Zn,La/gamma-Al2O3SO4 for the transesterification of triglyceride with alcohol

The potential catalytic system of K,Mg,Zn,La/gamma-Al2O3SO4 for transesterification was synthesized, and then physically characterized by TPD-NH3, TPD-CO2, BET, XRD, and EDX methods. As seen from results of physical characterization, the synthesized K,Mg,Zn,La/gamma-Al2O3SO4 material owns large surface area of 247.14 m2/g, mean capillary diameter of 11.97 nm. The presence of Zn creates strong acid sites on the catalyst surface corresponding to the NH3 desorption temperature at 557.3°C, and Mg creates strong base sites corresponding to the CO2 desorption temperature at 544.8°C. The transesterification between methanol and beef tallow at 100:1 in molar ratio, catalyzed by the above synthesized catalyst, was carried out at 65°C for 8 hours in order to check the operation of this catalyst. It was found that the catalyst was good enough for the transesterification with reaction efficiency up to 99.1 percent.
