The purpose of this experiment is to determine the optimal modality to cultivate and transplant epithelial cell sheets from limbal stem cells, oral mucosal stem cells and conjunctival stem cells to treat Limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD) symptoms. The authors succeeded in creating epithelial cell sheets from three different types of stem cells. Confluent sheets of epithelial cells at the harvesting day possess the morphological and immunohistochemical features of corneal epithelium. The ocular surfaces were successfully reconstructed in 60 - 80 percent of LSCD patients with autologous cultivated oral mucosai/limbal epithelial sheets.
