Tan Phuong proposed nature reserve is has an area of 11,456 ha with the ecosystem that is typical for the the forest ecosystem in northern Vietnam. The reserve is located in an area that is known for high biological diversity with many rare and endangered plant and wildlife species, including reptiles and amphibians. In a survey from August to October 2010, a total of 42 species of reptiles, belonging to 2 orders and 11 families and 24 species of frogs belonging to 3 orders and 8 families were recorded. Of these, 8 species (6 species of reptiles and 2 amphibians) are listed in the IUCN Red List (2010), 11 species (10 species of reptiles and o,ne amphibian species) are listed in the Red Data Book of Vietnam (2007). In those endangered species, some species such as king croba (Ophiophagus hannah), big-headed turtle (Platystemon megaeephalum) have very small population size and can potentially be extitlt locally.
