This paper presents several issues related to asphalt surfacing on orthotropic steel bridge decks. Main causes of failures are analysed. Appropriate materials for functions of each layer are mentioned. Typical surfacing structures used popularly in several countries are introduced and evaluated. Key tests to assess quality of surfacing structure are specified. Content of this paper contributes information to the surfacing on orthotropic steel bridge decks.
