This study investigates the prevalence rate of hypertension and risk factors in An Lao and Don Xa communes of the Binh Luc district, Ha Nam province. A cross - sectional study was conducted to determine the the prevalence of hypertension and some risk factors in 1009 adults aged 18 years old and above. The individuals were selected by door - to - door sampling method. Blood pressure was measured by automatic sphygmomanometer following standard protocol. Life style risk factors were interviewed by standard quetstionaire. The results showed that the prevalence of hypertension among adults aged 18 and above was 24.4 percent. Men had a significant higher rate of hypertnesion (28.3 percent) than women (22.6 percent). The prevalence rate of stage I hypertension was 16.9 percent, stage II was 5.0 percent and stage III was 2.5 percent. Risk factors of hypertension were man (OR = 1.35, 95 percent CI: 1.01 to 1.83); age; obesity and overweight (OR = 2.43, 95 percent CI: 1.42 to 4.20) and Smoking (OR = 1.4, 95 percent CI: 1.03 to 1.91).
