Climate change (CC) and sea level rise (SLR) will exacerbate existing problems, creating more difficulties in establishing a sustainable livelihood for coastal inhabitants, especially the poor. Results of livelihood analysis for the local inhabitants of Go Cong Dong, a district in Tien Giang province lieing in between two river mouths, show that the livelihoods of local inhabitants is still not sustainable. Local people make their living mainly from agriculture, aquaculture and nearshore fishing activities. Existing problems include mangrove forest degradation, coastal erosion, drought, salinity intrusion, nearshore and coastal ecological system degradation, hot weather, price fluctuation etc. Results of assessment of impacts of CC and SLR to natural resources and environemnt and then livelihoods of local inhabitants show that CC and SLR will increase risks for the livelihoods of local people. Based on the analysis results, a sustainable livelihood framework was established with appropriate livelihood strategies to reduce existing livelihood risks, and increase the capacity to adapt to future climate conditions.
