At present, management of septage from septic tanks in urban areas in Vietnam is': facing with number of challenges: No master plan for treatment and disposal of septage within an urban area or multi-urban areas; The transportation of septage from the centers to the temporary placesis very long ways; In fact, the collected septage after emptying of septic tanks are not controlled. It was directly discharged to ponds, open land areas, for argiculture use without any treatment. These caused the environmental pollution situations and high risks to the public health. Exept some general articles in Vietnam Building Code - Urban Engineering Infrastructure (QCVN 07:2010/BXD), no instructutions or guidelines for management of sept age are issued. This paper give assessments of the current situation and necessity in the fecal sludge management and treatment in urban areas of Vietnam as a basis for further researches and the basis for the managers and specialists made management and treatment measures of septage in accordance with the conditions of urban Vietnam.
