Adequate knowledge and practice about risks associated with waste as well as waste sorting, collection, and treatment contribute to the reduction of environmental pollution caused by waste. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted to describe the knowledge and practice of domestic solid waste in Thuong Thanh ward, Hanoi in 2014. Results: The proportion of people with the right and sufficient knowledge on components, classification of waste, and negative effects on health were 25 percent, 34.0 percent and 35 percent respectively. Proportion of household waste sorted at source was 32.5 percent, mainly by categories of salable / not salable (17.0 percent), inorganic / organic (12.0 percent). Among household garbage sorting ways, the category of inorganic / organic waste / hazardous waste was not mentioned. Regarding garbage collection, collecting garbage at home then disposing at the garbage collection point when the staffs come to collect accounted for 83.5 percent while disposing garbage at public collection point was 14.5 percent. Conclusion: Knowledge of the composition, negative effects of waste and classification of waste of people at Thuong Thanh ward were still limited. Waste sorting practice at home of the households was low. The vast majority of households in the study were aware of waste collection.
