Background: p53 gene mutation has been demonstrated to be associated with the progression of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Aims: To investigate the relationship between p53 gene mutation with HCC in patients infected with hepatitis B virus (HBV). Subjects: 94 HCC patients infected with HBV and 100 healthy control were enrolled in this study. Methods: p53 gene mutation was identified by PCR-RFLP. Results: p53 gene mutation at codon 249 (Arginine - Serine) was found in 15/194 (7.73 percent) cases. This mutation was seen more frequently in HCC patients than in healthy control (12.7 percent vs 3 percent, p 0.05). This mutation is associated with the progression of HCC (OR (95 percent CI)
