The area of Xuan Lien Nature Reserve included 5 communes (Bat Mot, Yen Nhen, Luong Son, Xuan Cam and Van Xuan) and 39 villages. Total area of 5 communes in Xuan Lien Nature Reserve is 664.84km2. Population is 24,652 people. The average density is 74.16 people/km2. The economical sources of family in Xuan Lien is under medium level of rural area of Thanh Hoa, which is not a driving factor for economic development. The lowest level are Yen Nhan, Bat Mot and Van Xuan commune, those communes are most impact to biodiversity of Xuan Lien. The timber species have been exploited included: Aglaia maeocarpa, Magnolia fordiana, Mi faveolata, Parashorea chinense, Madhuca aft. pasquyeri, Vatica odorata, Ormqsia bafansae, Markhamia, stipufata, Fokienia hodginsii, Cunninghamia konishii, Dracontomelum duperreanum, Syzygium zeylanicu, Melia azedarach. The group of timber species included: 15 species for everyday used; 11 species using and selling. The group of food include: 2 species for everyday used; 4 species using and selling. The group of material included: 5 species for everyday used; 2 species using and selling. The group of fire wood is diverse, it had been exploited for everyday using and selling. The distribution of exploited within core area of nature reserve included: Timber group 12 species; non-wood species 1 species; herbal medicine species 3 species; food, eating 2 species. Local people exploit all the time, the most concentrated in June to August. The villages which bordered with nature reserve enter the core aree for exploitation 4-6 times per month, the villages without bordered are 2-4 times per month.
