This paper examined the role of social factors in reducing the use of plastic bags in the central coastal communities. Based on a quota sample of 450 households collected in three beach cities (Nha Trang, Quy Nhon, and Da Nang), the SEM is applied for analysis. The results show that the group of social factors (Injunctive norms, family norms, descriptive norms) have a positive impact on behavioral intention to reduce the single-use plastic bags. The analysis of the moderator variable shows that for the female group, the impact of social factors on the intention and the degree of certainty to reducing the single-use plastic bags is greater than that of the male group. The paper makes some policy recommendations on education and communication in coastal communities to reduce the single-use plastic bags in the future.
