Measurement of urinary catecholamine metabolites is a valuable aid to the diagnosis of neuroblastoma. The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic values of neuroblastoma of urinary HVA and VMA. Sensitivity, specificity and receiver operating characteristrics (ROC) curves were calculated for measuring the diagnostic values of urinary HVA and VMA. Single HVA and VMA determinations displayed very good sensititity (Se) and specificity (Sp) for the diagnosis of neuroblastoma. For all age groups, at the cut-off value of HVA at 19.2 IJmollmmol creatinine, the Se was 86 percent, Sp was 96.3 percent and AUC (area under the ROC curve) was 0.944. At the cut-off value of VMA 9.9 IJmollmmol creatinine, the Se was 82.0 percent, Sp was 93.8 percent and AUC was 0.886. In the 1 to less than 5 years age group, HVA showed better performance than VMA, but in the 5 to less than 10 year age group, VMA diagnostic value was better than HVA. However, for all age groups, HVA displayed better diagnostic value than VMA.
