The Ban pig is a local breed raised by the Hmong ethnic group in Thuan Chau District, Son La Province, which has a low percentage of fat and is thought to be a particularly good tasting meat. The aims of this study were to investigate the husbandry methods of 289 households keeping 50 Ban pigs, monitoring the biological and growth characteristics of the pigs from birth to the age of 8 months. Most of the Ban pigs were housed in a and 70.59 percent of their dietary intake came from foraging. The body is was, small (less than 2 meters in length), solid, sway backed and smooth skinned. The skin color of body is generally black (32 percent), most had white on parts of the legs and tip of the tail (48 percent), the remaining skin area of the abdomen, shoulders and back is white. The Ban pig retains some wild behavior characteristics and is well adapted to the husbandry practices of ethnic group owners. The survival percentage is high (100 percent). Growth is slow, the body weight at birth, 3 months and 8 months was 0.42, 7.95 and 30.07 kg, respectively. The percent of lean meat of the Ban pig is high (44.63 percent).The Ban pig could be bred to provide specialty food and to increase farmers' income.
