Mutations in the tumor suppressor gene p53 are important factors in human lung carcinogenesis. Multiple single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) have been identified in the gene p53. The Arg72Pro of exon 4 gene P53 has been investigated and reportedly is associated with lung cancer susceptibility. the authors examined the genotypes distribution of p53 codon 72 polymorphism in 100 lung cancer patients and 100 noncancer controls of Vietnam by RFLP-PCR method. The frequencies of Arg/Arg, Arg/Pro, Pro/Pro genotypes in lung cancer (16 percent, 64 percent, 23 percent) are not statistically significant difference to controls (11 percent, 65 percent, 24 percent) (p = 0.55). And the frequencies of Arg and Pro allele in lung cancer (0.465; 0.535) not statistically significant difference to controls (0.435; 0.565) (p = 0.58). But, the frequencies of Pro allele in lung cancer patients and controls (0,55) is 1.2-fold higher than the frequencies of Arg allele (0.45) with p = 0.05. Conclusions: the authors haven't found the association between R72P polymorphism and lung cancer in Vietnamese.
