At the United Nations Summit on Happiness and Social Welfare held in 2012, it is advisable that countries should take happiness as the right measure of social progress and the goal of public policy into consideration (World Happiness Report, 2012). A key point in this process is to determine a correlation between happiness and economic, social, environmental factors, and welfare. Based on this important thesis, The World Happiness Report has developed a number of central themes for its annual reports. The relationship between gender equality and happiness IS the central theme of the 2016 World Happiness Report. This article will focus on clarifying this relationship. Research results show that: gender equality is an integral part of happiness. There is a connection, yet complexity, between gender equality and happiness. If gender-stereotypes are not broken, women and men will continue to face gender inequality even though they are given equal opportunities. This can have a negative effect on their feelings of happiness. Therefore, gender equality interventions are needed not only to bring in better conditions for either women and men but also to foster the overall happiness of both genders.
