According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Vietnam is among the most vulnerable countries against climate change. Labour productivity, especially in the agricultural sector, is projected to decrease by 26% in the high-emission scenario and 12% in the low-emission scenario. The annual damage caused by climate change is estimated to be 1.5% of GDP. To achieve objectives related to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and developing a low-carbon economy, the government, prime minister, and ministries have implemented various policies and actions to reduce the greenhouse gas (KNK) emissions in five sectors that have the highest emissions and absorption, including 1-energy, 2-agriculture, 3-land use, land use change and forestry, 4-waste, and 5-industry. This article provides an overview of carbon pricing tools worldwide, the current status of implementation, and some recommendations to promote carbon pricing in Vietnam.
