Ship stability is one of the important characteristics in survivability. Several ideas such as active "and passive anti rolling devices are considered to enhance the stability. The water contained in the ballast tanksis essential toprovide the balance and stability of a ship. Since the stability is closely related to the ballast tanks, it is necessary to determine the size and arrangement of ballast tanks.ln an early stage, ballast tankdesign can be considered as a multimodal objective problem. In present research, a hybrid optimization technique that combines genetic algorithm and sequential quadratic programming is developed to determine the appropriate parametric values of ballast tank design.
